Reflecting on Our Tree Planting Expedition with BGE TRIP & MendakiPohon
In February 2024, BGE TRIP initiated a transformative journey to rejuvenate Mount Agung’s verdant landscapes through a dedicated tree planting expedition. Over the course of two days, from February 24th to 25th, 33 passionate volunteers joined forces to plant over 110 trees, symbolizing our commitment to environmental conservation and sustainability.
A Tale of Two Days:Â
DAY 1 : HikingÂ
Relive the highlights of our two-day eco-adventure, from traversing the trails of Mount Agung to planting seeds of change and fostering a deeper connection with nature. Joining hands with 22 eager volunteers and 10 local porters, we set off on our mission to make a difference in the lush landscapes of Mount Agung. The adventure kicks off with a trek through the scenic trails of Mount Agung via Cegi Village, with each participant carrying 3-5 trees and personal belongings in carrier bags.
As we ascend to our camping site at approximately 1200 meters above sea level, we encounter a sudden big rain storm, but our spirits remain undaunted as we press on through the rain. Despite the weather’s challenges, the breathtaking views and tranquil sounds of nature uplift our spirits, reminding us of the beauty and resilience of the natural world. Along the way, laughter and friendship filled the air, as our team of passionate individuals worked together to carry trees to their new homes and ensure their successful planting.Â

Upon reaching the camping site, we swiftly set up our tents and gather around for an evening of camaraderie and shared laughter. With tasks divided among us, some prepare ingredients for cooking, some preparing for tree planting sign-flag, while others taking care of the campfire, creating a warm and inviting atmosphere as we prepare a simple yet delicious meal together.
After dinner, we come together in a circle for a special evening ritual: KIRTAN. Guided by Gary, one of our volunteers from India, the melodic tunes of the guitar and soulful chants fill the air, creating a magical ambiance under the glow of the full moon. It’s a transformative experience for all, igniting a sense of unity and connection as we sing together into the night. One of the best experiences and songs I’ve ever heard. Our tree planting volunteer event truly unforgettable end the day 1 truly peaceful.

Growing Together: Impact and GratitudeÂ
DAY 2 : PlantingÂ
Discover the lasting impact of our tree planting efforts and express gratitude to our dedicated volunteers. As the sun rises on the second day, we gather our energy and enthusiasm to embark on the main event: tree planting. With determination in our hearts and shovels in hand, we set out to plant over 110 trees, including indigenous shade trees like banyan, majegau, jintungan, and kepuh, as well as fruit-bearing trees that will provide sustenance for hikers and farmers in the future.
Despite intermittent rainfall throughout the day, our spirits remain high as we work together to dig holes, plant our trees, and marked a sign of planted trees. We’re super proud to add up this forest with more tree variety, especially the ones that are almost gone. It wasn’t like a walk in the park for us (easy task to do), we had to clear out some pesky grass to give our trees the best shot at growing not disturbed, but we nailed it in the end together!
As the event draws to a close, we gather for a final circle to reflect on our experiences and express gratitude to each other and the land that has welcomed us. With hearts full of hope and determination, we bid farewell to Mount Agung, knowing that our efforts have made a lasting impact on the environment and the community.
These moments of togetherness and harmony amidst the rugged terrain of Mount Agung are what make our tree planting volunteer event truly unforgettable. Join us on this journey of discovery and conservation as we work together to nurture the land and create a brighter, greener future for generations to come. We also preserve old native trees for the future, aiming to maintain the lush jungle we once had. Nowadays, it’s turning into more of a monoculture land and farm. However, we plant trees in mountain areas because they can’t be privately owned, giving them a better chance to grow big and remain untouched by concrete development.
